IPTV on Amazon Fire TV: a practical setup guide
A Fire TV Stick is small and easy to move from one TV to another. But which apps you can find depends both on the generation of your device and on the country your Amazon account is registered in. Here is how to get the device ready.
This guide covers the settings on the device itself. Which app to use is something your provider tells you. Menu names may differ slightly between Fire TV generations.
Step 1: Which Fire TV do you have?
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. You will see the model name and software version. It matters: older generations do not always get the same apps as new ones.
Step 2: Update
In the same place you will find Check for Updates. Install what is offered and let the device restart.
Step 3: Look over the network
Under Settings → Network you can see which network the device is using. Two tips:
- If the stick sits directly behind the TV, the set itself can shield the Wi-Fi signal. The extender cable in the box moves the stick out a little and often helps.
- Choose the 5 GHz network if the router is close. It is faster but has a shorter reach.
More on choosing between wireless and cable in Wi-Fi or Ethernet for streaming.
Step 4: Install from the Amazon Appstore
- Select the magnifying glass on the home screen.
- Search for the name of the app you were given by your provider.
- Choose Get or Download.
Apps that are not in the store for your region will not show up in the search. We do not recommend installing software from unknown sources – ask your provider whether there is a supported alternative instead.
Step 5: Keep storage under control
A Fire TV Stick has limited storage. Under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications you can clear the cache and remove apps you do not use. A full device gets slow, and playback can start to stutter.
If the picture freezes
- Unplug the power for ten seconds and start again.
- Check that the stick is powered by the adapter that came with it, not by the TV’s USB port.
- Measure the speed in the same room.
- Contact support with the model, the software version and a description of the fault.
Check before you buy
Not bought a Fire TV yet? Ask first whether the model can be used. At SagaIPTV you do that through the Devices page, and the rest of the process is described under Setup.
